Basic Cyber Security Steps needed by Everyone
As many Australians have found out over the last months, cyber security is a real issue. So what can you do to stay safe ?
Here's short list of easy steps to increase your security online right now.
-
If offered ALWAYS use 2 factor authentication.
-
Use passphrases - not passwords and make sure you include numbers and symbols as well.
-
Use different passphrases for EACH account. NEVER EVER reuse passwords, no matter how tempting.
-
Ensure your phone and computer software is up to date, and set for regular updates.
-
Be careful when using free Wifi - some are not secure, so don't do banking or other sensitive things when on free wifi.
-
Keep your social media locked down, share info with friends, but not the whole world. Consider having a "fake" birthday for social media and all those newsletters etc you sign up for.
-
NEVER click on links that are sent unsolicited. Go directly to the site and double check it's legit, call the person, make sure it's a safe link.
-
Lastly if an email along with a link implies that's it's urgent, treat it with EXTREME suspicion. If it was THAT urgent wouldn't the person/organisation call you ? Don't click on it ! Call the purported person or organisation.
